Sometimes anime can be a bit over the top with skin tight costumes on overly endowed women. I was a bit concerned about the anime art. This ensures there are plenty of inserts to keep the game interesting but the trade off is that one player can dominate. In a two player game, the hand winner is given the same number of inserts as the loser. But the designers chose to remove the brilliant catch up mechanic. It's still fun and my Mom and I will happily play a quick game. Unfortunately, Custom Heroes doesn't work as well with 2 players. In 3 or higher player counts, this really balances the game, ensuring that one player can't dominate every hand. This gives the losing players more ammunition to win the next hand and forces the winning player to work harder. Second, third, fourth and so on don't get as many points, but they do get to draw more inserts, with last place drawing the most. The winner each hand gets points, but doesn't get to replenish their inserts. Custom Heroes does this the best I've seen in a card game. I love games that allow players who are behind a fighting chance. I haven't even mentioned the most brilliant part of this game - the catch up mechanism. I was a bit worried that the card crafting would be too strange for her, but after a handful of plays she figured out how and when to use the inserts to her advantage. My mother, who has been playing cards for 70+ years, quickly took to the offered nuances. They really gravitated to the card crafting aspect, using their inserts as soon as they could and leaving nothing in reserve. Despite this straightforward tactic, the game never quite gelled with my boys. In our games, the winning player usually took control of lead and held on to lead for the hand. This lends a bit of surprise to the game - even if you know your opponent doesn't have a needed base card, they can still come back for the win with a timely modification. There are so many inserts that it would take a true savant to count what has been played and what hasn't. But that same insert may prove more valuable later during a pivotal moment. It may be tempting to burn a big insert early on to win a turn. Holding on to powerful inserts is also an interesting part of the game. Or you may go all in with 4 of a kind, dumping lots of cards in a single play. You may lead with a single card in the hopes of splitting an opponent's pair. Deciding what to lead is a very interesting decision. Our first playthrough was a bit disappointing, but we persevered and eventually found the richness Custom Heroes can offer. This is not like other card games we played. It took several playthroughs for the game mechanics and tactics to sink in. Once crafted, the card retains its modification for the rest of the game. You can do this any time as long as you have cards and transparent inserts. You can use the transparent inserts to modify the value of a card, adding or subtracting from the value, to create a pair. A pair of 4's is led and you don't have a natural pair to follow.

The second twist is that you can upgrade the cards in your hand. The number of cards led is like the suit - the leader picks and everyone must follow. They can also lead with a pair of cards, requiring each player to play a pair, or 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind and so on. They can lead with a single card, in which case each successive player must play a single card. The first twist is that the lead player determines how many cards must be played. Play continues until one player sheds all of their cards, winning the hand. The turn continues until all players have passed and the turn ends. Each hand consists of turns, where one player leads cards and other players must successively beat the previous cards or pass. In theory Custom Heroes is very straightforward. Custom Heroes, with its striking anime art and card shedding game play, was more appealing. My son, Ethan, has been fascinated with the card crafting system, but I was turned off by the simple game play and generic theme of the first game. Plastic sleeves hold the base card, to which transparent inserts are added, upgrading the abilities of the base card. Ha! Suckers !Д¬ustom Heroes uses the card crafting system introduced in Mystic Vale.

So AEG, the makers of Custom Heroes, needlessly sent me a copy of their game, when I would have paid them for the privilege of writing about their game and providing free advertising and PR. See, I was already going to buy a copy of Custom Heros.
